Center Console vs Cabin Boat: Which Is Right for You?

A center console boat keeps the helm in an open console with deck space all around it. A cabin boat puts a roof and walls over the helm, and often a cabin below. If you want the most open deck, for fishing, diving or tender work, a center console is the better fit. If you want shelter on long runs and cold days, go with a cabin boat. Protector builds both: the open Chase range and the enclosed Targa range.

If you're unsure which one fits how you'll use the boat, talk to our Vancouver team. We'll help you weigh a center console against a cabin boat before you look at sizes.

What Is a Center Console Boat?

On a center console boat, the helm sits in a console in the middle of the deck. There's no roof or cabin over it, so you can walk all the way around the boat and reach the water from almost anywhere. That's why anglers and divers tend to prefer them.

Protector's Chase range is its center console line. It runs from the 7.5 m 250 Chase up to the 12.5 m 410 Chase, and every size keeps the same open deck. A bigger Chase gets you more room and more range, but the layout doesn't change.

What Is a Cabin Boat?

A cabin boat has an enclosed space at the helm, below deck, or both. There are two common types. A cuddy cabin has a small cabin in the bow, usually for storage or a quick rest, while the helm stays open. A pilothouse boat goes further and encloses the helm itself, so the driver and crew stay out of the wind and spray.

Protector's Targa range is the pilothouse version. Every Targa has a hardtop and an enclosed helm over a deep-vee RIB hull, and the larger models add cabin space below. The range covers the 310, 330, 380 and 410 Targa, plus the performance 330R.

Which Is Better for Fishing and Diving?

For most fishing and diving, a center console is easier to work from. You can move all the way around the boat, fish off any side, and get divers and their gear in and out over the tubes without anything in the way.

A cabin boat still works well for fishing, especially on longer trips. Most of the fishing happens from the aft cockpit, and you have somewhere dry to warm up between spots. If you fish from early spring into late fall on the BC coast, you'll be glad of that shelter.

Which Is Better for Year-Round Boating in BC?

If you plan to use the boat through the winter, a cabin boat makes more sense. An enclosed helm keeps the crew dry when the weather turns, and long runs in cold wind are a lot more comfortable.

A center console is at its best in the warmer months, and on short trips where you're in and out of the boat a lot. Plenty of owners still run one all year with the right gear, but you'll feel the weather more.

How the Sizes Compare

The Chase range goes from the compact 250 up to the 410, and every model keeps the open center console layout. Moving up a size gets you more deck and more range.

The Targa range scales the same way across the 310, 330, 380 and 410, with more cabin space as the hull gets longer. The 330R Targa sits outside that progression. It's a performance version of the Targa for owners who want the shelter of a cabin and more speed. The model pages have the full specs for each size.

Frequently asked questions

Is a center console boat good in rough water?

That depends more on the hull than the layout. A deep-vee hull with an inflatable collar, like the one under every Protector, stays stable in chop. On a center console you're out in the spray, though, while a cabin boat keeps you dry.

What's the difference between a cuddy cabin and a pilothouse?

A cuddy cabin is a small cabin in the bow, usually for storage or a rest, and the helm stays open. A pilothouse encloses the helm itself, so the driver and crew are sheltered. The Protector Targa is a pilothouse design.

Can you fish from a cabin boat?

Yes. Most cabin boats are fished from the aft cockpit, and the cabin gives you somewhere dry between spots. A center console gives you more room to move around the whole boat.

Which is the better fit for a tender to a larger yacht?

A center console like the Protector Chase is the more common choice, because the open deck makes it easy to load gear and passengers. A cabin boat like the Targa can do the same job when weather protection matters more than deck space.
