A hull with a working history

The 310 Targa carries a pedigree most 31ft recreational RIBs don't: hulls built to this specification have served military, police, border-protection and coastguard fleets, where the demands are unambiguous — reach a scene in rough water, protect the crew, and get everyone home. That operational history shapes the boat now sold to private owners in Canada. The enclosed pilothouse isn't a styling choice; it's a hard structure between the helm crew and green water, with sightlines built around hours on watch rather than an afternoon out.

Forward, a walk-through bow replaces the usual scramble over pulpit rails. Crew can move from the foredeck to the pilothouse without leaving the deck, which matters as much for a boarding party as it does for anyone handling lines, an anchor, or a paddleboard at a mooring. It's a detail that reads as convenience on a private boat and as procedure on a patrol vessel — the same feature, two different jobs.

Below, the cabin can be fitted with twin bunks, turning a day boat into something that holds a crew, or a couple, overnight. On a working vessel those berths cover a rotation; on a private 310 Targa they extend a weekend on the water into something longer, without changing the boat's footprint at the dock.

None of this is bolted on after the fact. The 310 Targa's commercial and recreational versions come off the same hull tooling in Auckland, which is the point: a boat built to survive a coastguard duty cycle is, by the same specification, built to survive everything a private owner will ask of it. Protector Boats Canada specifies each Canadian order (engines, electronics, cabin layout) against that baseline, not around it.

For a private buyer, the practical read is straightforward. The comfort on board (an enclosed helm, a walk-through bow, a cabin with berths below) comes from the same platform a coastguard or border-patrol crew would be issued, configured for a different owner.

Configuration and options

Power is specified within the 310 Targa's 400-900hp range, sized to how the boat will actually be used — a long-range patrol or commercial tender spec differs from a private owner's cruising pattern. The enclosed pilothouse is standard to the model; cabin fit-out is where private and commercial orders diverge most, with twin bunks available for owners who want to stay aboard overnight. Seating, upholstery, colour and electronics are worked through with our team during the design phase, the same process used for every Protector built for Canada, and signed off before the boat goes into build in Auckland.
